Understanding data storage technology involved in the end-to-end storage stack, including host servers and the software defined storage product, has allowed Vedams to become an expert in the in-depth analysis of storage product field issues having data unavailability and/or data loss. Vedams teams deep-dive to understand the root cause of any data unavailability or loss situation.
On a daily basis, this includes understanding and establishing the chain of events that lead to the situation, and developing pre-emptive and predictive strategies to avoid similar problems with data storage technology in the future. This service already has an impact towards quality improvement by identifying flaws in support procedures, patterns in the sequence of events leading to a product defect, and breaks in functionality between releases. Corrective steps involve updated Tech Bulletins, fix identification, and recommending proactive replacement of error-exhibiting components.
This service has been extended to analyze logs from products returned for failure analysis. In a very short duration, log analysis delivered a 15 percent reduction in expenses that were wrongly billed by the hardware manufacturer to the company, and also helped improve the testing process at the manufacturer.
Field Analytics Training
In order to perform such analysis, Vedams has developed its own training university for new engineers. While parts of the training are common across clients, there are client-specific elements as well. Building upon the experience developed on projects that include development, testing and support of data storage technology products, the team offers education on firmware, software defined storage products, intercommunication protocol between the head and storage, and the monitoring of the storage units themselves. This level of detail is important for conducting successful, in-depth, field issue analysis.
